Darjeeling: Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) activists clashed with the police on Thursday and torched four of their vehicles in the wake of their demands to declare Gorkhaland a separate state. The police used tear gas to resist the agitation and stone pelting by activists.


The protest erupted near Bhanu Bhavans where the GJM supporters tried to break the barricades put up by the police. The activists were trying to march to the venue of the state cabinet meeting to hold a rally to press their demand for a separate state of Gorkhaland.

Among other issues they were also protesting for the imposition of Bengali language in schools in the hills.

Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee along with other cabinet ministers were here to hold a meeting of her cabinet.

The supporters also held Dharna and raised anti slogans for the Chief Minister. Shops were shut down and traffic was interrupted causing inconvenience to the tourists.
