Shahabuddin was serving a life sentence in a 2004 double murder case in which two brothers were killed for not paying extortion money.

Satish and Girish Roshan were murdered in August 2004 in Siwan for refusing to pay extortion money. A third brother, Rajiv Roshan, who was an eyewitness, was shot dead on June 6, 2014.

On December 9, 2015, a special judge had convicted Shahabuddin and his associates for the murders and sentenced them to life imprisonment.

There are more than three dozen criminal cases against Shahabuddin.

Before going to Tihar Jail, he has also spent a long time in the jail of Bhagalpur and Siwan in Bihar. He came out of jail after getting bail in the year 2018, but soon his bail was cancelled and he had to return back. On 15 February 2018, the Supreme Court ordered the former RJD MP to be brought from Siwan to Tihar Jail.
