Former CBI director and ex-Governor of eastern state Nagaland, Ashwani Kumar was found dead at his residence in Brockhorst in Shimla on Wednesday. As per the reports so far, a team of police officers and medical staff has rushed to Kumar's residence. Few reports have claimed that Kumar had been depressed for past few weeks. The officer was reportedly found hanging at his residence in Brockhurst, near Chhota Shimla, in the evening.

News agency ANI quoted Shimla Superintendent of Police Mohit Chawla saying that, "Former Governor of Manipur and Nagaland, and Ex-CBI Director Ashwani Kumar found hanging at his residence in Shimla."

Briefing further in the matter, Himachal Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Sanjay Kundu told PTI that a suicide note was recovered in which Kumar had written that he he is embarking on a new journey.

The senior official went on to mention that the family members of Kumar were present when he went inside the room, locked it and committed suicide by hanging himself with a nylon rope.

"The family does not suspect any foul play. We have seized the items in the room. The post-mortem will be conducted on Thursday morning," DGP Sanjay Kundu said.

Ashwani Kumar has served as the DGP of Himachal Pradesh from August 2006 to July 2008. After this, he was appointed the Chief of the CBI. Ashwini Kumar held this post from August 2, 2008 till November 30, 2010. Kumar also served as the Governor of Nagaland between 2013 and 2014. In that same period, Ashwani was briefly the Governor of Manipur too.
