Former Assam CM and Congress leader Tarun Gogoi passed away in Guwahati, announced state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The senior Congress leader Tarun Gogoi passed away on Monday. He was suffering from multi-organ dysfunction.


The former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi breathed his last at 5.34 P.M on Monday at GMCH. He had recovered earlier from Covid but had comorbidities. He was undergoing treatment at GMCG for post-Covid complications.

He had tested positive for COVID-19 on August 25 and admitted to the GMCH the next day.

Assam’s longest-serving chief minister was again rushed to the hospital due to post-Covid complications. Gogoi was admitted on November 2 after he complained of breathlessness.

The report of Gogoi’s demise came hours after chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal tweeted that he was flying back to Guwahati from Dibrugarh to visit the veteran Congress leader. “Flying back to Guwahati from Dibrugarh after cancelling my programmes midway to be on the side of respected Tarun Gogoi da & his family as the former CM’s health deteriorates. He has always been a father figure to me,” he wrote on the microblogging site.

He suffered multiple organ failures and on Sunday, doctors performed dialysis on him as he was unable to pass urine naturally due to kidney problem.

PM Modi expresses condolences


Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the passing away of the former Assam Chief Minister. PM took to twitter and shared his condolences.


Gogoi led the Congress to a record three consecutive electoral victories in Assam in 2001, 2006, and 2011, and served as the chief minister of the state for 15 years (2001-2016), thus becoming the longest-serving chief minister of the state.
