EVKS Elangovan, former Tamil Nadu Congress President and Erode MLA, passed away due to lung-related illness at a private hospital in Chennai on Saturday. He was 75-year-old. EKVS Elangovan was receiving treatment at a Chennai hospital for the past month.
“He passed away today despite the best efforts of the medical staff,” the hospital said, as per PTI.
EVKS Elangovan is the son of EVK Sampath. He is also a grandson of EV Ramasamy Periyar.
TNCC President K. Selvaperunthagai called the passing of E.V.K.S. Elangovan "a huge loss," describing him as an outspoken leader whose death is an irreparable loss to his family, the Congress party, and himself personally.
After paying respect to the departed, Tamil Nadu CM Stalin said, "Dear friend EVKS Ilangovan, who had the ability to speak from the heart, has passed away! His passing away is a great loss to Tamil Nadu politics, as he belonged to a long political tradition. It is with a heavy heart that I pay my last respects to a dear friend."
MP Karti P Chidambaram expressed his deepest condolences on the passing away of the senior Congress leader.

Who is EVKS Elangovan?
Elangovan, born on December 21, 1948, in Erode District, served as the Union Textiles Minister in Dr. Manmohan Singh's government from 2004 to 2009. He was appointed TNCC President by Sonia Gandhi on October 31, 2014, following B.S. Gnanadesikan's resignation.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he was the sole UPA candidate to lose in Tamil Nadu, defeated in Theni by O. P. Ravindranath Kumar, son of O. Panneerselvam.
Last year, after his son passed away as sitting MLA of Erode (East) Assembly seat, EVKS Elangovan contested the elections and secured a win by a margin of 66.82%.
Elangovan's son, Thirumagan Evera, passed away from cardiac arrest on January 4, 2023, at the age of 46. EVKS Elangovan represented the seat vacated by his son after wining the byelections last year.
