The crescent moon was sighted in India on Sunday, marking the culmination of the holy month of Ramadan. Eid-al-Fitr will be celebrated in the country on Monday, 31st March 2025.
Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated across the world on different days and it is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon which is supposed to denote the start of the Shawwal month in the lunar Islamic calendar.
The festival, observed by the Muslim commnity, was celebrated in several parts of the world, including West Asia, US, Europe and other countries, on Sunday (March 30).
Chairman of the Central Moon Sighting Committee, Khalid Rashid Farangi, announced that the Eid moon has been sighted in Lucknow on Monday and Eid-al-fitr will be celebrated on Monday, (March 31).
"The moon has been sighted today, i.e. on March 30 and Eid-al-Fitr will be celebrated on March 31. Namaz will be offered at 10 am in Lucknow Eidgah," Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangi Mahali said.
Meanwhile, Fatehpuri Masjid Imam Mufti Mukarram Ahmad said that the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee of the mosque contacted many places and was informed that the moon was sighted at several places. "Eid will be celebrated in the country on March 31, Monday, he said. Describing Eid as a festival of brotherhood and harmony," Ahmad said.
Eid-al-Fitr comes after the holy month of Ramadan, which started on March 2, after the crescent moon was spotted on March 1, 2025. This year the month of Ramzan was of 29 days, while last year it was of 30 days. According to the Islamic calendar, there are 29 or 30 days in a month, depending on the sighting of the moon.
The Eid celebrations started in Saudi Arabia on Sunday after the crescent moon was sighted for the first time in the Gulf nation. The Middle Eastern nation observes the crescent moon a day ahead of India, Pakistan and other neighbouring nations.
