Early Monsoon To Onset In Kerala; TN, Andhra Escape Heatwave Amid Shift In South Weather Pattern

The IMD noted that the atmospheric conditions are becoming favorable for the monsoon’s advancement over entire Lakshadweep and Kerala, as well as portions of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Coastal Andhra.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the conditions are increasingly conducive for the southwest monsoon to make its arrival in Kerala over the next few days, with further progress anticipated across various southern and eastern regions of the country between May 29 and June 4. In its latest update, the IMD noted that the atmospheric and oceanic conditions are becoming favorable for the monsoon’s advancement over the entire Lakshadweep Islands and Kerala, as well as significant portions of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh. 

Monsoon Progression Across South India 

The monsoon is also expected to move over Rayalaseema, the South and Central Bay of Bengal, the North Bay of Bengal, and the northeastern states during the same period, reported Business Today.

"The conditions are likely to become favourable for monsoon onset over Kerala during the next two days," the IMD stated. It added that favorable developments are also expected for the further spread of the monsoon across the remaining parts of the Maldives and Comorin region, additional sections of the South Arabian Sea, and parts of northeastern India.

Heat Relief In Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh

In an unusual development, Tamil Nadu is witnessing a premature shift to monsoon conditions this year. Summer temperatures have dipped earlier than usual, deviating from the norm for May, which is typically characterised by intense heat, reported Indian Express. This year’s monsoon advance is among the earliest since 2010, leading to cooler-than-usual weather in the region.

According to the IMD, Tamil Nadu is set to receive widespread rainfall until at least May 24, supported by strong pre-monsoon activity across Karnataka, Maharashtra, and interior parts of the state.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema have also seen a departure from typical seasonal patterns, with no recorded instances of heatwaves so far, reported Times of India. With steady rainfall expected through the end of May, officials believe it is unlikely that either region will experience extreme heat days before the season concludes.
