Dehradun: A Haridwar court on Sunday sent religious leader Yati Narsinghanand, the organiser of the ‘Dharma Sansad’, to 14-day judicial custody.
Rakinder Singh Kathait, the SHO of Haridwar Police Station, said Narsinghanand has been booked under Sections 295 (A) and 509 of the Indian Penal Code and sent to Roshnabad Jail, PTI reported.
Narsinghanand, the head priest of the Dasna temple in Ghaziabad, was arrested on Saturday night in connection with the Haridwar hate speech case.
Narsinghanand was picked up from Sarvanand Ghat of the Ganga, where he was staging a ‘satyagraha’ against the arrest of another accused -- Jitendra Narayan Tyagi earlier known as Waseem Rizvi -- in the case.
The SHO said Tyagi is already in jail.
Tyagi was arrested in connection with this case earlier on Thursday.
Two FIRs are lodged in Haridwar against more than ten people, including Narasinghanand and Tyagi, in connection with the ‘Dharma Sansad’ case.
Some of the speakers are accused of delivering hate speeches against a particular community at the ‘Dharma Sansad’ held in Haridwar from December 17 to 19 last year.
The case is being probed by a special investigation team.
The ‘Dharam Sansad’ conclave, where the hate speeches were allegedly delivered, was organised in Haridwar by Yati Narsinghanand and in Delhi by ‘Hindu Yuva Vahini’.
The Supreme Court had earlier this week sought response from the Central government and others on a petition seeking a direction to ensure investigation and action against those who allegedly made hate speeches during the two events held in Haridwar and Delhi.
