The BJP decided on Devendra Fadnavis as the new CM of Maharashtra at the meeting of the legislature party. Fadnavis's political career is now in its golden period. However, he has seen many ups and downs in his career.


Known for his leadership skills and pragmatic approach, Devendra Fadnavis is now a pivotal figure in Maharashtra politics. His father's imprisonment during the Emergency had a profound impact on him. Born into a middle-class family in Nagpur, he started his political career at a young age, joining the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), in 1989. He became a councillor at just 22 and Nagpur's youngest mayor at just 27 years.


During the Emergency, when his father, Gangadharrao Fadnavis, was jailed for opposing the government, Fadnavis refused to continue his schooling at Indira Convent as it was named after the former PM. He then enrolled at Saraswati Vidyalaya in Nagpur. He graduated in law and has also studied business management.


Devendra Fadnavais's Rise From Grassroots


In the early days of his political career, Fadnavis used to put up party political posters and paintings on walls, which shows that he was a grassroots leader.


He completed two consecutive terms as Mayor. In 2013, Fadnavis was appointed as the president of BJP in Maharashtra. This was a position that increased his political influence. In 2014, he became the 18th Chief Minister of Maharashtra.


Fadnavis's political acumen was further demonstrated when he took oath as Deputy Chief Minister in the coalition government led by Eknath Shinde in 2022. His first term was marked by significant infrastructure projects and economic initiatives that bolstered Maharashtra's position as an industrial powerhouse.


Despite facing challenges, including a brief second term in 2019 that lasted only three days, Fadnavis's resilience and strategic manoeuvring kept him at the forefront of state politics

According to information provided to the Election Commission, Devendra Fadnavis's total net worth is Rs 13.27 crore, while he also has a liability of Rs 62 lakh. According to Myneta.com, Fadnavis's total income during the year 2023-24 was Rs 79.3 lakh. According to the election affidavit, Devendra Fadnavis and his wife have more than Rs 5 lakh deposited in their bank accounts. He has not invested in the stock market, bonds or debentures. However, his wife Amruta Fadnavis has an investment of around Rs 5.63 crore in bonds, shares and mutual funds.


Devendra Fadnavis has Rs 17 lakh deposited in his NSS-Postal Saving account, while he also has an LIC policy worth Rs 3 lakh. Talking about movable assets, Devendra Fadnavis has about 450 grams of gold and his wife has 900 grams of gold, which is said to be worth around Rs 98 lakh. Devendra Fadnavis and his wife do not have any cars in their names. Talking about Devendra Fadnavis's immovable property, agricultural land worth Rs 1.27 crore is registered in the names of him and his wife Amruta Fadnavis. Devendra Fadnavis has two houses worth Rs 3 crore and Rs 47 lakh.


As Fadnavis prepares to take office again on December 5, 2024, he stands on the brink of making history as one of Maharashtra’s longest-serving chief ministers. Vasantrao Naik is te longest serving CM of Maharashtra with a tenure of a little over 11 years. He is the only Maharashtra CM other than Devendra Fadnavis to have completed a full term.
