New Delhi: 742 people were fined by the Delhi Police on Sunday for not wearing a face mask and 159 others were fined for violating social distancing norms, officials said Monday.
"The process of unlocking has been started and we urge people to follow the Covid-appropriate behaviour. Use face mask while coming out of the house, maintain social distancing and regularly sanitise their hands. People should not come out of their homes unnecessarily," Delhi Police Additional Public Relations Officer (PRO) Anil Mittal said.
According to official data, 730 people were fined for not wearing a mask on March 28 and nine others paid a penalty for not maintaining social distancing. On March 29, 920 were fined for not wearing a mask and 19 others for flouting social distancing norms.
Officials on Monday informed that a total of 901 challans were issued on Sunday. These include 742 for not wearing a face mask and 159 for flouting social distancing norms.
A total of 1,22,911 challans have been issued by the police from April 19 to June 6, the data revealed.
According to it, 1,03,387 people were fined for not wearing a face mask, 17,805 were penalised for not maintaining social distancing, 1,526 for large public gatherings or congregations, 72 for spitting and 121 for consumption of liquor, pan, tobacco etc.
This can be seen as worrying development as the national capital gradually unlocks with the second wave of Covid infections subsidising.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had Saturday announced several relaxations in the lockdown that was imposed on April 19, saying Covid situation was improving and the economy of the city needed to be revived.
He had urged the citizens to continue following Covid appropriate behaviour for the pandemic situation to remain under control. With markets and other public spaces gradually opening, will people be mindful of their responsibilities or will cases rise again due to negligence - remains to be seen.
