The Deep Depression over southwest Bay of Bengal intensified into a Cyclonic Storm “Michaung” (pronounced as MIGJAUM), the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Sunday. It intensified within the region, positioning itself approximately 300 km east-southeast of Puducherry, 310 km southeast of Chennai, 440 km southeast of Nellore, and 550 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam.




"Deep Depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal intensified into a Cyclonic Storm MICHAUNG 0530 hrs IST 3rd Dec over the same region about 300 km east-southeast of Puducherry, 310 km southeast of Chennai, 440 km southeast of Nellore and 550 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam," India Meteorological Department said.






It is likely to continue to move northwestwards, intensify further and reach Westcentral Bay Of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamilnadu coasts by 4th December forenoon, Met Department said.

 

Thereafter, it would move nearly northwards almost parallel and close to the south Andhra Pradesh coast and cross the South Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam during the forenoon of 5th December as a CS with a maximum sustained wind speed of 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph, India Meteorological Department further added.

 

All Districts are on High Alert as Cyclone Michaung is approaching. In anticipation of Cyclone Michaung's impact, district administrations have heightened alertness. Nellore district has proactively declared a holiday for all educational institutions on December 4 (Monday). The Meteorological Department's forecast includes expectations of light to moderate rainfall across most areas, with heavy to very heavy rainfall anticipated in specific regions of south coastal Andhra Pradesh on December 3.



Concerningly, heavy to very heavy rainfall, possibly reaching extremely heavy levels, is foreseen in isolated areas across coastal AP and Yanam on December 4 and 5. Additionally, isolated heavy rainfall is expected in north-coastal Andhra on December 6. Rayalaseema region might experience light to moderate rainfall from December 2 to 4, with possibilities of isolated instances of heavy rainfall on December 3 and very heavy rainfall in isolated places.
