Covid 19 Update: India reported 602 new Covid cases on Wednesday, as reported by news agency ANI. Five deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. With the new additions, the active caseload currently stands at 4,440.
On Tuesday, India recorded 573 fresh cases of Covid-19. The number of daily cases had dropped to double digits until December 5, but cases have again gone up after the emergence of a new variant and cold weather conditions.
So far, a total of 312 cases of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been detected in the country. Around 47 percent of the total cases were recorded in Kerala, news agency PTI reported, citing INSACOG's data on Tuesday. Ten states and Union territories have so far detected the presence of the JN.1 sub-variant of the virus.
These states are Kerala (147), Goa (51), Gujarat (34), Maharashtra (26), Tamil Nadu (22), Delhi (16), Karnataka (eight), Rajasthan (five), Telangana (two), and Odisha (one), according to the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG).
According to INSACOG's data, 279 Covid cases recorded in the country in December had the presence of JN.1, while 33 such cases were detected in November.
According to the officials, 16 cases of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 were reported in the national capital, and the majority of the patients were recovering in home isolation, PTI reported on Tuesday. Delhi reported its first case of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 last week. According to an official, reports of 19 samples sent for genome sequencing were received on Monday.
In Maharashtra, 105 fresh coronavirus-positive cases were reported, as per the health department, PTI reported. Zero fatalities were reported in the state. As of Tuesday, the state has reported a total of 32 cases of the JN.1 sub-variant of the virus, it said. With the fresh cases, the state's overall case tally rose to 81,73,011 and the toll to 1,48,567.
