New Delhi: India has reported 7,350 fresh Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours. It takes the active caseload in the country to 91,456, the lowest in the last 561 days according to the press release by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The number of deaths recorded in the last 24 hours was 202 with 7,973 recoveries. The active cases account for 0.26 percent of the total cases which is the lowest since March 2020. With this, the recovery rate stands at 98.37 percent. And the fatality rate stands at 1.37 percent.

Total vaccinations done in the last 24 hours were 19,10,917, taking the total vaccinations to 1,33,17,84,462. The recovery rate stands at the highest since March 2020.

Though the positivity rate is declining at a slow pace with a high recovery rate, the fear of Omicron still looms over India as the country’s Omicron count reached 38 last evening. Omicron cases seem to be increasing rapidly in the country suggesting a possible third wave.

So far, 63 countries have confirmed Omicron positive cases. The new variant was reported on November 25 and is still being investigated by the World Health Organization experts. On Sunday, WHO experts claimed that the new variant is highly transmissible and early evidence suggests that it lowers vaccine efficacy.

However, the global health body pointed out that the symptoms developed because of Omicron are not severe, reported AFP. It is necessary to track Omicron in India as it may take the positivity rate higher even if not that severe.
