New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government on Sunday ordered the constitution of a new Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a multi-crore drug case as reported by news agency ANI.
The new SIT will now investigate the drug case on the orders of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The new team will be led by IGP Gursharan Singh Sandhu and includes four other members. Apart from AIG S Rahul and Ranjit Singh, these include two DSP rank officers.
This is the first order issued by CM Mann regarding the police department, where he has ordered the reorganisation of the SIT against Majithia on charges of drug trafficking.
"A new SIT team consisting of four members has been formed to be headed by AIG S Rahul for the investigation of a drug case involving SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia," said Punjab state police chief Viresh Kumar Bhawra to reporters today as quoted by ANI.

The previous SIT headed by AIG Balraj Singh was investigating the case. The SIT was constituted on December 20, 2021, to investigate the allegations against former Minister Majithia on the basis of FIRs filed under various sections of the NDPS Act. The 49-page FIR was based on the investigation report against drugs by ADGP Harpreet Singh Sidhu, head of STF.
Majithia, who is currently lodged in Patiala Jail, has also lost elections from Amritsar East in assembly elections. The previous Congress government led by Charanjit Singh Channi of Punjab had registered a drug case against Majithia as the elections approached. This case was registered on the report of SIT. Majithia had surrendered in the court on February 24.
