Two days after the Home Affairs Ministry notified the rules for implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, AIADMK MLA VV Rajan Chellappa said that the party's support for the CAA under the leadership of the then CM Edappadi K Palaniswami was not wholehearted. Back in 2019, AIADMK then in alliance with the BJP showcased its support for the CAA with the vote of lone MP in the Lok Sabha and 11 MPs in the Rajya Sabha.


On CAA notification, AIADMK MLA VV Rajan Chellappa said, "The then AIADMK government under Edappadi K Palaniswami did not sign the CAA wholeheartedly. AIADMK signed the CAA with conditions during the alliance with BJP. AIADMK will always support good deeds... We do not fully support the CAA..."

In a tweet on Monday, Leader of Opposition EPS said, "The Central government has committed a historic blunder with this. The AIADMK will never allow any attempt to implement it against indigenous people--the Muslims and Sri Lankan Tamils. AIADMK will join the people of the country to democratically oppose it."


However, the statement of the AIADMK leaders on CAA just ahead of Lok Sabha elections 2024 throws light on the inconsistent stand of the party on the matter. It may be noted that AIADMK staged a walkout when DMK and its allies passed a resolution against CAA in Tamil Nadu Assembly although they clarified that the walkout was for different reasons. 


The Act, which was passed in Parliament in December 2019 led to widespread protests and has remained a point of contention in Indian politics.
