New Delhi: At least one person has died and around 20 have been injured after a car ran over a group of people walking to immerse an idol of Goddess Durga on the occasion of Vijayadashmi in Pathalgaon of Chhattisgarh's Jashpur district.


Both the accused who were inside the car have been arrested and all injured have been admitted to a Civil Hospital.


One body was brought to the hospital, while 16 others hospitalised soon after the incident. Two of them being referred to other hospitals after x-ray that established fracture, Block Medical Officer James Minj told news agency ANI.

The one person who died has been identified as Gaurav Aggarwal, 21, a resident of Pathalgaon in Jashpur. 


A speeding car with Madhya Pradesh number plate driving towards Sukhrapara mowed down people. 


The accused have been identified as Bablu Vishwakarma and Shishupal Sahu, and are residents of Madhya Pradesh and were passing through Chhattisgarh, news agency ANI quoted the Jashpur SP Office as saying. Action is being taken against them, it further said.


Meanwhile, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has condemned the incident and has assured of strict action against the accused. 


"Jashpur incident is very sad & heart-wrenching. The accused have been immediately arrested. Action has also been taken against the Police officers who seemed to be guilty prima facie. Probe has been ordered, nobody will be spared. Justice will be given to all," he tweeted.



The incident comes days after a convoy of vehicles, including one owned by Union Minister Ajay Mishra and allegedly driven by his son Ashish Mishra, mowed down five people in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri.
