Chhath Puja 2018: Chhath Puja is a prominent Hindu festival which is celebrated just six days after Diwali. It is festival of devotion and believes in which Lord Surya (the Sun God) and Chatti Maiya are worshipped. It is celebrated mainly in the state of Bihar, Jharkhand and certain parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Nepal. Chhath Puja is also known as Surya Shashti, Chhathi and Dala Chhath.

It is a 4-day festival in which the devotees offer prayers to the Sun God and take dips in the holy waters of Ganga according to sunrise and sunset timings. As per beliefs of the Hindu religion, the Sun can heal severe health issues and ensure longevity, prosperity, and well-being. Chhath puja 2018 will commence from November 13, i.e. Tuesday.

Chhath Puja 2018: Significance of Surya Shashthi 


This holy festival is dedicated to the Sun God and his partner, Chhathi Maiya. As per the report by India.com, Sun is depicted as the one who is the source of all life forms on the planet while Chhathi Maiya is Usha, Surya’s wife.

According to the mythological descriptions, in Rig Veda, Usha meaning the first light of day is symbolically described as the dawn of divine consciousness in an individual. Not just Usha, Chhaht Puja also witnesses the worship of Pratyusha (the last ray of sun before it sets).
