Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, is likely to witness partly cloudy skies and moderate showers on Wednesday, following a spell of intense rain on Tuesday. Localised showers brought some relief from the oppressive heat, but humid conditions continue to prevail in many parts of the city.
Chennai recorded a maximum temperature of 37–38°C, while the minimum hovered around 26–27°C. Rainfall was unevenly distributed, with the Nungambakkam observatory logging 1.56 cm of rain by 7:30 pm on Tuesday. In stark contrast, the Meenambakkam station recorded just 0.02 cm, highlighting the patchy nature of the rainfall.
Yellow Alert For 11 Tamil Nadu Districts
Elsewhere in Tamil Nadu, light to moderate showers were reported at a few places in the north and at isolated locations in the south. Puducherry and Karaikal also saw scattered rain under partly cloudy skies.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has attributed the current weather activity to favourable wind convergence, even in the absence of a strong monsoon current along the west coast. This convergence has triggered thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rain in several regions — a pattern expected to continue over the next 24 hours.
A Yellow Alert has been issued for Wednesday, warning of heavy rainfall at isolated locations in 11 districts: Tiruvannamalai, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Viluppuram, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, and Mayiladuthurai, along with parts of Puducherry.
Residents in these districts are advised to remain cautious, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Authorities are monitoring the situation, though no major disruptions have been reported so far.
Meanwhile, TANGEDCO will conduct maintenance in Chennai on June 12, 2025, from 9 AM to 2 PM, causing power outages in Ottiyambakkam, Pallikaranai, Radhanagar, Chrompet, New Colony and Jalladianpet. The maintenance work includes tree trimming and equipment servicing to ensure reliable power.
