In a major push toward tech-driven policing, the Greater Chennai Police has unveiled an innovative initiative dubbed the ‘Red Button – Robotic Cop’, set to debut at 200 key locations across the city from June. This cutting-edge system combines robotics, 24x7 CCTV surveillance, GPS tracking, and emergency communication features to enhance law enforcement and public safety, particularly for women and vulnerable groups.

These robotic units will be deployed in high-traffic zones such as railway stations, shopping complexes, educational institutions, places of worship, hospitals, and public parks, as per a report on The New Indian Express.

The key features include 360-degree video monitoring with long-range precision, real-time GPS-based location tracking, emergency red button that can be pressed by the person in distress or a bystander, automatic alarm and instant alert to police control rooms, live video call feature that connects directly to police teams, high-definition camera and two-way microphone and immediate dispatch of patrol vehicles upon alert.

Robo Cops: How To Avail Service

In an announcement, Chennai Police stated that the Red Button Robotic Cop initiative is aimed at strengthening women's safety and ensuring quick response during emergencies.

At the time of crisis, pressing the red button triggers a series of automated actions—an audible alarm, real-time video feed transmission, and a video call with the control room, allowing police to assess the situation and dispatch help without delay.

Authorities say this AI-backed initiative is part of their broader effort to integrate smart technology into everyday policing, reducing response time and improving on-the-ground coordination.

“We encourage everyone to be aware of this system and use it during emergencies for quick help and safety,” they said announcing the rollout.
