West Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar on Tuesday stirred up a controversy when he called Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee "Lady Hitler". He said that Trinamool Congress leader and Bengal Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya had compared PM Narendra Modi with the German dictator because she is always with "Lady Hitler" — Mamata Banerjee.

"Chandrima Bhattacharya is always with Lady Hitler. That is why she is remembering Hitler and comparing him with PM Modi. Let me remind her that even the buildings of West Bengal Govt are coloured according to the wish of our Lady Hitler of this state, that is Mamata Banerjee," Majumdar said

Reacting to Majumdar's jibe, Chandrima Bhattacharya called PM Modi 'Nandlal' and said: "Look at the 'Nandlal' of the Government of India. He is Hitler. According to him, India says what he says. So, who actually is Hitler? Comparing Mamata Banerjee to Hitler is like living in a fool's paradise."

PM Modi, during his recent Karnataka poll campaign, said that the Opposition called him names, including Hitler. He said that he had received a list of 90 abuses that the Opposition hurled at him. Countering his claim, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi said that he was the first prime minister to "cry" in front of the people. “I am seeing such a PM for the first time, who comes in front of you and cries that he was being abused. Rather than hearing your grievances, he narrates his woes,” she said.

"Someone in PM Modi's office has compiled a list that is not about people's problems." That list represents the number of times Modi has been abused. At the very least, the list is limited to one page. Look at the insults they (BJP officials) have flung at my family, and if we start creating lists, we'll have to publish book after book," she said.

This is not the first time that PM Modi or Bnegal CM Banerjee have been compared to German dictator Adolf Hitler. In January, former Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah said that PM Modi's rule would end like Hitler's. The AAP in February said the same thing after Income Tax officials conducted raids at the BBC offices in Delhi and Mumbai. The next month, Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot said that PM Modi must not harp on his popularity, as Hitler was also quite popular among his people initially. In March 2022, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury had said that PM Modi was trying to control the education system like Hitler through the agency of governors.

Similarly, last month, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had accused Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee of ruling like Hitler and vowed to put an end to it.
