New Delhi: Contesting the Chandigarh municipal corporation elections for the first time, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has come out at the top trumping more established BJP, Congress, and SAD in the polls.
In 35 wards, the number of wards extended from 26 in 2016, AAP was able to secure 14 wards while BJP held ground in 12 wards and Congress won 8 wards as per the poll officer. Akali Dal managed to win one ward.
Winners & Losers Chandigarh MC Polls 2021:
Sitting mayor Ravi Kant Sharma of the BJP was defeated by AAP candidate Damanpreet Singh in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation polls. Ravi Kant Sharma lost his seat from ward number 17 by a margin of 828 votes.
Former mayor and BJP candidate Davesh Moudgil lost to AAP's Jasbir by 939 votes from ward number 21.
AAP's 'Grand Welcome'
After the initial trends showed that AAP is leading from the front in Chandigarh MC Polls, Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia indicated that this is a "grand welcome" by the public.
"AAP is contesting elections there for the first time and according to the current trends, the people of Chandigarh have given us a grand welcome. I want to thank every voter and party worker for this," Sisodia said on initial Chandigarh municipal corporation poll results.
"This victory of the Aam Aadmi Party in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is a sign of the coming change in Punjab," tweeted AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal.
Senior AAP leader Raghav Chadha, while commenting upon AAP's performance in the MC polls, said people of Chandigarh have backed the "Kejriwal model of governance".
Asked if Chandigarh MC Poll results, which is the common capital of Punjab and Haryana, will have any impact on the upcoming Punjab assembly polls, Chadha quipped: "This is just a trailer. 'Chandigarh Abhi Jhanki hai, Punjab Abhi baki hai'. The mood of the people here will be seen in upcoming Punjab polls too".
Chandigarh MC Polls 2016:
In the Chandigarh MC Polls 2016, BJP was able to secure 20 wards while Congress secured 4, Akali Dal had to be content with 1 and an independent candidate was able to bag one.
For the Chandigarh municipal corporation elections, 2021 counting of votes started to take place at 9 am on Monday. A total of 203 candidates were in the fray from 35 wards.
On Friday, December 24, polling was done for Chandigarh municipal corporation. And around 60.7% voter turnout was recorded.
