This is what Congress spokesperson Randeep Sujrewala had to say on the matter:
- Modi government is suffocating people with a flurry of announcements and decisions. People cannot comprehend 32 orders passed in 16 days of demonetization.
- The constant change in the deadline for the exchange of new currency has led to a lot of confusion especially among the poor.
- Government’s latest decision to completely stop the exchange of old currency is nothing short of Utopian.
- Sujrewala expressed concern for the unorganized sector and the large un-bankable economy of the country as only 53 percent of the nation’s population has bank accounts.
Central Government on Thursday decided that there will be no over the counter exchange of old Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes after midnight of Nov 24.
While the government has extended the use of defunct Rs.500 notes in public utilities and certain other services like pre-paid mobile top-up till December 15, Rs.1000 notes would no longer be allowed to be used for the list of exemptions the government had announced.
They can, however, be deposited in bank accounts.
