New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has reopened a corruption case against former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, as reported by NDTV. The move to reopen the case comes months after Nitish Kumar parted ways with the BJP in Bihar and joined hands with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) to form the government. Kumar had then alleged a BJP plan to split his party.
In 2018, The CBI began a probe into allegations of corruption in the allotment of Railway projects when Yadav was handling the portfolio in the UPA-1 government. The inquiry into the matter was closed in May 2021, with CBI sources stating that "no case has been made out of the allegations", NDTV reported.
Along with Lalu Prasad Yadav, his son and Bihar's Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, and daughters Chanda Yadav and Ragini Yadav were also named in the case.
According to NDTV, the probe agency's fresh move can possibly spark a political row as opposition parties double down on their allegations of the misuse of the agencies by the Narendra Modi-led central government. Lalu, 74, was suffering from acute kidney complications for some time and the doctors advised him a kidney transplant.
His daughter Rohini came forward to be his donor. After her insistence, the family chose Singapore for the surgery. Rohini Acharya is married to Rao Samresh Singh, an engineer by profession and lives in Singapore. The couple has two sons and a daughter.
Earlier in December, RJD's Misa Bharti extended gratitude to the people for their wishes on the behalf of her father Lalu Prasad Yadav who underwent a kidney transplant surgery in Singapore.
