MUMBAI: BJP swept the Mira Road and Bhayander municipal polls on Monday.

BJP had fielded 90 candidates while its ally RPI (A) had put forward four candidates. Shiv Sena fielded all 94 candidates.

Till last reports came in, BJP had secured 47 seats out of 95. Shiv Sena was at a distant second with mere nine seats. Opposition Congress had not been able to touch double digits and was dangling at 6 seats. Sharad Pawar’s NCP hadn’t even opened its account.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis thanked people of #MiraBhayandar for having faith in the party.

Kirit Somaiya, BJP MP from Mumbai North-East, slammed Sena in his series of tweets, "BJP sweeps #MiraBhayander Municipal Election-Disaster of #ShivSena hope now BandraSupremo will accept Reality & Respect PM Modi CM Fadnavis."

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray had campaigned ahead of the polls.

Counting of votes for the election results began at 10:00 am today. Polling for the 94 of the 95 seats of Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation took place amid heavy rains on Sunday.

The Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation is currently held by the Sena-BJP combine. Prior to this, the MBMC was held by Congress-NCP.
