New Delhi: Both Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Youth Congress on Thursday ended up with a gaffe as they wished the Muslim community on the occasion of Muharram.

BJP's Arunachal Pradesh unit and Youth Congress tweeted "Happy Muharram" to their Muslim followers, only to realise their mistake and delete the respective tweets later.

Even though their tweets have been deleted, the screenshots of their Muharram wishes have been shared by other accounts on social media.

Even though well-intentioned, their tweets are unsuitable for the occasion which is observed as a period for mourning.

As per the screenshots, Youth Congress had tweeted: "On the auspicious day of Muharram, may the almighty bless all with health, wealth, peace and happiness. #HappyMuharram"

Whereas BJP Arunachal Pradesh wrote: "Sending warm wishes to all or Muslim brethren. Happy Muharram! May your new year be blessed with peace, happiness, and joy".

The month of Muharram holds great importance for the Muslim community as a month of mourning. Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It comes after the last month of Zill Haj.

Muharram is about mourning the martyrdom of Imam Hussain in the battle of Karbala. A mourning procession is also carried out remembering the atrocities inflicted on Imam Hussain who is an important figure in the religion.

Several uninformed people go on to send wishes for the occasion which is erroneous and more such posts can be seen on Twitter.
