Bengaluru Rains: Schools Closed, WFH Advisory Issued Amid 'Yellow Alert' As City Braces For More Downpour

Bengaluru has been experiencing relentless rainfall for the last four days which has already led to widespread flooding in several residential areas.

Bengaluru rains: The Bengaluru Urban district administration declared a holiday for schools and Anganwadi centres on Wednesday, October 23, following a ‘yellow’ alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for heavy rainfall in the city. The move was described as a “precautionary measure in the interest of students' safety” amid forecasts of more intense rain in the coming hours.

According to the IMD, Bengaluru received 23.6 mm of rain in the last 24 hours up to 8:30 AM on Wednesday. With the northeast monsoon active over South Interior Karnataka, heavy downpours are expected to persist. The IMD has warned of a generally cloudy sky with moderate rain or thundershowers, with occasional heavy rainfall likely in parts of the city.

In light of the situation, the Karnataka government has also issued a work-from-home advisory to information technology, biotechnology, electronics, and private companies in the city. The Department of IT-BT and Electronics stated that the advisory prioritizes the safety of employees amid anticipated bad weather conditions.

A yellow alert indicates that the city may receive heavy rainfall ranging from 6 cm to 11 cm. Bengaluru has been experiencing relentless rainfall for the last four days, which has already led to widespread flooding in several residential areas. On Tuesday, overnight rainfall broke the city’s records for the highest amount received in a single day over the past two decades, turning roads into rivers and disrupting daily life, as reported by The Mint.

The IMD has also forecast isolated heavy rain and thunderstorms in districts such as Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Dharwad, Belagavi, Haveri, Mandya, Mysuru, Hassan, Kodagu, Ramanagara, Tumkur, and Chitradurga. Meanwhile, moderate rainfall is expected across most districts of South Interior Karnataka, while North Interior Karnataka and Coastal Karnataka may see lighter showers.

Currently, the relief operations are underway. 

 

However, the rainfall has once again brought pothole on roads back in picture. 

Meanwhile, authorities have urged residents to stay cautious and avoid unnecessary travel as waterlogging and localized flooding continue to impact various parts of the city.
