New Delhi: Clashes broke out between two groups near Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy’s residence in Kolkata's Lake Green area on Monday, leaving eight people injured.

The police arrested six people in relation to the brawl, a police officer told news agency PTI.

“We are looking for others involved in the incident. A large number of police personnel have been deployed in the locality,” the officer said.

As per PTI sources, the members of the two groups had allegiance to the ruling TMC. As per the same sources, the clash took place as the two groups had been seeking control of the construction business in the area.

Meanwhile, Roy told PTI, “I have not seen such clashes in this area before. I am a resident of this area for more than 60 years. I had to call the officer-in-charge of Lake Gardens police station and seek his intervention.”

The ruling TMC has been under pressure as the opposing BJP has been questioning the law and order situation in the state, especially after the Birbhum violence case that left nine dead.

The police are still investigating the case of violence in Birbhum that erupted after TMC leader Bhadu Sheikh’s death.

Another incident took place in Nadia district that was a minor’s gang rape case. One of the accused in the case is a TMC leader’s son.

The police are investigating the matter and two accused have been arrested so far. Three of the accused are absconding currently. The opposing BJP has been targeting TMC after CM Mamata Banerjee’s questioning of the case saying if it was a rape or an affair.
