Bahraich: A 30-year-old man who tried to flee from police custody was shot in the leg, in the Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh. The man was held for allegedly raping a one-and-a-half-year-old girl in a village in the district on Monday night.


The toddler was taken to a hospital where she died during treatment.

According to an IANS report, the man who was her neighbour kidnapped the toddler while she was asleep next to her mother and took her to a primary school in the village where he allegedly raped her. He was spotted by villagers who beat him up and handed him over to the police. 


The toddler was rushed to a hospital where she died during her treatment. Her body has been sent for post mortem. 


“Hearing the cries of the child, locals informed the police who rushed her to the hospital and launched a hunt for the accused. However, the girl succumbed to injuries,” Superintendent of Police, Bahraich, Sujata Singh told Time of India.


An FIR was registered against the accused based on the complaint of the victim's father under section 376 AB of IPC and section 5M/6 of the POCSO Act. In an attempt to try and avoid arrest he tried to flee from the police who has reached to take him to the magistrate. But as he tried to run the police started firing which left him injured.


He was taken to a community health center for treatment.


While speaking to Times of India, SP Sujata Singh, said that they were informed about the rape of a toddler. The man took the girl to a primary school in Nanpara and raped her repeatedly late on Monday night and later he fled the spot. 


“We will also invoke NSA against him,” she added according to TOI.
