New Delhi: An Indian Army officer will be facing a General Court Martial on 12 different charges of wrongdoing and corruption during the period of demonetisation in November 2016, news agency ANI reported.

As per the report, the Court Martial will begin on January 10, 2022, at the Western Command Headquarters where disciplinary proceedings in the cases related to corruption in demonetisation were going on.

The said Army officer, during demonetisation, was posted in the Army Postal Services in Delhi when the alleged act of corruption took place, ANI reported the government sources as saying.

As per the charges levied against the Army Captain, through “illegal means” he allowed an exchange of old currency notes for new notes on various occasions on such days when no transactions were allowed.

The officer also allegedly did not submit the record of the withdrawn currency notes that were held by the Army central base post office in the National Capital. The report further stated that the officer along with another accused in the case managed more than 5,000 forms for withdrawal of new currency notes using fake identity cards.

The Indian Army has tightened noose against their personnel found in different cases of corruption during the demonetisation exercise. Last week, a Lieutenant Colonel was convicted by a court-martial for offences in exchanging old currency notes for new ones.

Army chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane has taken a strict stand against cases of financial corruption in the forces as many officers have been punished in cases like these.
