In Gujarat, Shah served as the Home Minister in the BJP government led by PM Modi when he was Chief Minister. Shah held the position of BJP president for more than five-and-a-half years from 2014, and the party prospered under him, capturing power in many states and returning to power at the Centre in 2019 with a bigger win than in 2014.
Born in 1964 in Mumbai, Shah has been associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh or RSS from his younger days.
Shah is behind the BJP’s electoral fortunes, when he headed the party’s biggest membership drive when it crossed 100 million in 2015, the highest ever. In August, the 56-year-old BJP leader had tested positive for coronavirus on August 2 when he was taken to private hospital Medanta in Gurgaon. On August 14, he had tweeted that he would be in-home isolation for a few more days on the advice of his doctors.
Later he was admitted to the AIIMS and was discharged after 13 days. Despite his busy schedule and public engagements, Shah enjoys listening to classical music, playing chess, and watching a game of cricket.
