New Delhi: Actor Swara Bhasker received a death threat in a letter following which she lodged a police complaint against unidentified persons, news agency PTI reported. According to the report, the actor received the threat through an anonymous letter sent to her via speed-post to her residence in Versova. After her complaint, Mumbai police have launched a probe into the matter, an official said on Wednesday.
As per the report, the letter, drafted in Hindi, mentions that the youth of the country will not tolerate the insult of Veer Savarkar. The letter was signed in the end as “Desh Ke Naujawan”.
"Based on the complaint, we have registered a non-cognisable offence against unidentified persons," PTI quoted a police official as saying. He further added that investigation on the matter is underway.
Notably, the actor had raised her voice against the socio-political issues plaguing the society. Taking to her Twitter handle in 2017, the actor wrote, “Savarkar APOLOGISED to the British govt. pleaded to be out of jail! That’s not ‘Veer’ for sure…”
In 2019, she had also tweeted with a video saying, “The planned construction of a most cowardly ‘braveheart’ Understanding "Veer" Savarkar…”
Condemning the Udaipur incident where a person was beheaded under broad daylight, Swara tweeted, “Despicable and utterly condemnable.. The perpetrators should be dealt with promptly and strictly, as per law! Heinous crime.. Unjustifiable! As one often says.. if you want to kill in the name of your God, start with yourself! Sick sick monsters! #UdaipurHorror.”
Notably, actor Salman Khan and his screenwriter father Salim Khan received anonymous death threats earlier this month, as per reports.
This is not the first time that a celebrity from B-town has received a death threat. Several stars from the Hindi film industry have been threatened in the past. The list of these celebrities includes actors Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and also ‘Samrat Prithviraj’ star Akshay Kumar.
