India's active Covid infection tally reached 4049 after the health ministry recorded 756 new COVID cases on Sunday, as per news agency PTI.
According to the data updated by the ministry at 8 a.m., five deaths have also been reported. While two deaths each were reported from Kerala and Maharshtra, one was recorded in Jammu and Kashmir, according to PTI.
This comes after the country saw a sharp drop in the number of daily cases to double-digits on December 5, 2023. However, the emergence of a new variant and cold weather conditions led to an increase in cases again, added PTI.
After this, it was on December 31, 2023, that the country reported the maximum increase of 841 cases in a single day. Around 92 percent of the people on the list of active cases are recovering at homes under home isolation, said official sources as per PTI.
The official sources, as reported by PTI, also informed that as per the recent data collected, the JN-1 variant is not causing a substantial rise in fresh cases or a surge in mortality and hospitalisation cases.
Among the three waves of the pandemic that India has witnessed since the virus outbreak, the highest number of daily cases and deaths were recorded in April-June 2021, during the Delta wave.
