Sanjay Singh, the Aam Aadmi Party's leader, will not take oath as a Rajya Sabha MP on Monday. According to ANI, the Rajya Sabha chairman has refused to allow Singh to take oath, citing the subject being handled by the Privileges Committee at the moment. Sanjay Singh was suspended from the Rajya Sabha on July 24 of last year for failing to obey the chair's directives.
On AAP leader Sanjay Singh, Delhi minister & AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj said: "I think the Chairman of Rajya Sabha is going against the Constitutional provisions of this country. Article 99 says that every member shall take the oath. This matter of privileges was related to his membership which has already expired....You cannot deny him oath in his new term...I think they are just politicizing it.''
On Saturday, Delhi's Rouse Avenue court permitted the 51-year-old detained AAP leader to take his oath as an MP while in policy custody. The court judgement was given two days after Singh filed a motion in court requesting temporary release for oath and attendance at Parliament's current Budget session from February 5 to 9.
Singh's counsel stated in court that the application for temporary relief was not pursued since the AAP leader had to go to Sultanpur for a hearing in another case filed against him on February 7.
Because the ED did not challenge his updated plea, the judge denied the politician's temporary bail motion and permitted him to take oath on Monday.
Sanjay Singh has been in jail since October in connection with the ED's money laundering investigation into the now-defunct Delhi excise policy. On January 4, he was granted permission to file his nomination for Rajya Sabha membership, and on January 10, he went to the returning officer to get his membership certificate.
