Anantnag: In a major terrorist ambush on a police party, at least six policemen, including a Station House Officer, were killed near Achabal town in south Kashmir, reports said.
The attack took place in Thajiwara, some five km from here, reported news agency IANS. Two civilians were injured in the attack.
The attack came hours after security forces killed two Lashkar-e-Taiba militants in Arwani village of south Kashmir.
They said besides the fatalities, some other policemen sustained serious bullet injuries and were rushed to nearby hospital.
The terrorists reportedly disfigured the faces of the six cops slain in the attack before walking away with their weapons, police said.
A sub-inspector, identified as Pulwama-resident Feroz, a driver and four other policemen, who were on a routine round in their jeep, died in the attack, Director General of Police S P Vaid told PTI here.
Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashker-e-Taiba is believed to be behind the ambush, a senior police official said, adding they wanted to take revenge for the Arwani encounter in which their local commander, Junaid Mattoo, is believed to have died.
A combing operation is being conducted by the Army.
Further details are awaited.
