CHANDIGARH: The Punjab police have sounded an alert about the possible presence of at least six Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists in the state. The DGP (intelligence) in a letter to the police officials of Punjab said that six-seven terrorists of the JeM are hiding in Punjab's Ferozepur area and planning to move towards the national capital.

"According to an input a group of six-seven JeM terrorists are reportedly in Punjab, India (possibly Firozepir area) and are planning to move towards Delhi from Punjab side," the DGP (intelligence) said in a letter.

In view of the input, inter alia, "there is a need to mount immediate special/strong nakas at all important points and routes, conduct strict vehicular checking and take suitable counter measures for all sensitive locations in your area", the letter addressed to the authorities said.

There's a need to review and strengthen the second-line-of-defence along the Indo-Pak border and to coordinate closely with the BSF and other police and defence establishments in your areas, it said.

The alert was sounded a day after four persons, travelling in a hired SUV from Jammu, snatched the vehicle from its driver at gunpoint near Madhopur area. Security was tightened in and around Pathankot district following the incident and vehicles were checked. The suspects, who were speaking in Punjabi, had booked the car from the Jammu taxi stand.

In 2016, terrorists, who had launched attacks on the Pathankot Air base, had snatched a Punjab police officer's car to get to the air base.
