New Delhi: India being a country where the road conditions are extremely poor, most of the people prefer a motorcycle instead of a scooter, considering better usability. However, the sales figure of the Honda Activa begs to differ. After 17 years of its launch, the best-selling scooter of the country has surpassed the sales of the leading motorcycle to become the No.1 selling two-wheeler in the market for the last six months straight. The company sold around 13.38 lakh units of the Activa till now in 2016, and the figure is approximately 1.04 lakh unit more than the top selling motorcycle, the Hero Splendor. If we look at the sales figures of the same period in 2015, Honda has sold around 1.97 lakh unit more to attain the top position.
Commenting on this achievement, Yadvinder Singh Guleria, senior vice president, sales & marketing, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt Ltd said, “Activa today represents the metamorphosis of the society. The superior convenience, unisex appeal coupled with product features (increased mileage, style and technology) has converted millions from pillions to riders.Honda’s Activa has come to symbolise a remarkable blend of Reliability, Comfort & Convenience, Style and uncompromised performance. We thank our valued customers who have made Activa the most preferred choice of families for commuting in India. That’s what we call Activating the Nation.”
Launched in 2001, the Activa was the first two-wheeler from Honda in India which revived the dying scooter market. The scooter saw a boom in sales, from 55,000 units in 2001 to over 2.46 million units in the last financial year of 2015-16, with overall sales of more than 12 million units till now. Every second scooter purchased in India is the Activa and it alone contributes 15 per cent of the Indian two-wheeler market, which is even more than the entire 125cc segment.
