Chennai: Tamil Nadu government formed a five - member economic advisory panel to the Chief Minister including French economist Esther Duflo and former Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan on June 21.


The Noble Prize-winning economist Esther Duflo and the former RBI governor will guide CM. M.K. Stalin in governing the economic and social policies of the state.


They have joined the council along with Arvind Subramanian, the former top economic adviser to the Central Government, and Jean Dreze, a development economist, and S. Narayan, the former central finance secretary.


Duflo of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology shared the 2019 Nobel Prize in economics sciences with Abhijit Banerjee and Michael Kremer “for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.” 


Rajan, who is a professor at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business after leaving the RBI in 2016, will guide the rate-setting panel.


According to TN Governor, taking a note of its concerning fiscal health; Tamil Nadu government has come up with this panel of experts to revitalize the state’s economy.


“Based on the recommendation of the council, the government will revitalise the State’s economy and ensure that benefits of economic growth reach all segments of society,” said Mr. Purohit in his address to the State Legislative Assembly.
