New Delhi: The Delhi Legislative Assembly on Monday passed bills pertaining to hike in salaries of its members who are among the lowest paid in the country, reported news agency PTI. As per the bill, the Delhi Legislative Assembly members are entitled to a salary hike of 66 percent, the report stated further.
A total of five bills were tabled in the House for the hike in salaries of ministers, MLAs, chief whip, Speaker and Deputy Speaker, and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly which were passed by the members.
The report quoted Manish Sisodia who also holds the finance portfolio, as saying, "To invite talented people into politics, there has to be a reward. The corporations get a talented pool of people because of the salaries."
The pay hike was also supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party MLA and Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Ramvir Singh Bidhuri.
The Delhi Assembly’s session on Monday began with paying the obituaries to those killed in several accidents. The Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel extended condolences to the families of those killed in Delhi’s Mundka fire incident and Manipur landslide. On May 13, at least 27 people were killed after a roaring fire engulfed a commercial building in Delhi’s Mundka area whereas a massive landslide hit the railway construction site on Wednesday night in Manipur’s Noney district.
The Assembly also condoled the brutal beheading of Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur after Bidhuri demanded for the same which was supported by Aam Aadmi Party MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj who said that it was an unfortunate incident for all the communities. He also said that last respects should also be paid to those who have been killed in the Himachal Pradesh bus accident.
