New Delhi, July 24: As India begins its trials to develop a vaccination for the lethal coronavirus, the country recorded its highest single-day jump of 49,310 Covid-19 cases on Friday with the total number of cases nearing the 13-lakh mark. The country has reported 740 deaths in the last 24 hours, according to the health ministry data.

Even as the cases have witnessed an alarming rise, the total number of recoveries crossed 8.17 lakh. The death toll due to the disease rose to 30,601.

At present, the total number of active cases stands at 4,40,135, while 8,17,208 people have recovered and one person has migrated. A total of 34,602 patients have been declared cured in a day.

According to the ICMR, a total of 1,54,28,170 samples have been tested up to July 23 with 3,52,801 samples being tested on Thursday. Even as the total number of cases globally has surged, there is little relief with the vaccination still in the trial phases.

Israeli scientists are expected to arrive in India with breakthrough technologies to help the country cope with its soaring caseload. India and Israel had announced the joint development of rapid testing tools for covid-19 in May.

Meanwhile, Brinton Pharmaceuticals has got the approval of the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) for marketing favipiravir under the brand name Faviton for the management of mild to moderate coronavirus patients, the company said on Thursday.
