COVID-19 India Highlights: Maharashtra Corona Tally Dips Below 29,000; Mumbai Records 953 Cases In 24 Hrs

Coronavirus Highlights, May 18: With 4,329 deaths in last 24 hours, India reported highest fatalities from COVID-19 on Tuesday. However, there was a bright side as well, as 2,63,533 new cases were recorded, the lowest in 26 days.

There is no new COVID strain in our country: High Commission of Singapore

"There is no truth in the assertion that there is a new COVID strain in Singapore. Phylogenetic testing has shown that the B.1.617.2 variant is the prevalent strain in many of the COVID cases, including in children, in recent weeks in Singapore," High Commission of Singapore tweeted while replying to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal's post. 

Assam records 5,835 new COVID-19 cases

Assam reported 5,835 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total tally to 3,40,858. 4,311 recoveries and 73 deaths have been recorded in the last 24 hours. The number of active cases stands at 46,393 in Assam. 

Telangana adds 3k new cases

Telangana recorded 3,982 new cases, 5,186 recoveries and 27 fatalities till 5:30 pm, according to the media bulletin shared by the state government. 

Mumbai records dip in COVID-19 cases

Maharashtra reported 28,438 new Coronavirus cases, 52,898 discharges and 679 deaths in the last 24 hours. Maharashtra's Covid-19 new infections remained below the 30,000 level but increased from 26,616 on Monday to 28,438 on Tuesday. 


 


The state's capital Mumbai recorded 953 COVID-19 cases, 2,258 recoveries and 44 deaths in the last 24 hours. 

West Bengal adds 19,428 new cases

West Bengal reported 19,428 new Coronavirus cases and 145 deaths in the last 24 hours. 19,050 people recovered from the virus, taking the recovery tally to 10,26,492. The number of active cases stands at 1,31,793 in West Bengal. 

India records highest-ever single-day recoveries

 India recorded highest-ever single-day recoveries as more than 4 lakh COVID-19 patients recovered in the last 24 hours. 4,22,436 recoveries were reported, Lav Aggarwal, Joint Secretary in the Union Health Ministry, said on Tuesday.

Karnataka: 525 people die due to COVID-19 in last 24 hours

Karnataka reported 30,309 new COVID-19 cases and 525 deaths in the last 24 hours. 58,395 people recovered on Monday, taking the total recovery tally to 16,74,487. The number of active cases stands at 5,75,028. 

These states to see peak of second wave of COVID cases in next 2 weeks: SUTRA model

Tamil Nadu, Punjab and Assam may see the peak of second wave of COVID-19 cases in the next two weeks, the SUTRA model that charts the trajectory of Coronavirus suggested. Delhi, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have well passed their peak of the second wave, the model suggested. 

Goa adds 1358 fresh COVID-19 cases

Goa reported 1358 new COVID-19 cases and 3120 recoveries in the last 24 hours. 45 people died due to Coronavirus in the state on Monday. The number of active cases stands at 23,946. 

DCGI approves Covaxin for phase II/III clinical trials in 2-18 age group

COVAXIN has been approved by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), for phase II/III clinical trials in the age group of 2 to 18 years, Dr. VK Paul, Member-Health, Niti Aayog, said on Tuesday. He added that the trials would begin in the next 10-12 days.

Puducherry reports 1797 new cases

Puducherry reported 1797 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours. 33 people have lost their lives while 1670 have been discharged. The number of active cases stands at 17,477.

CoWIN portal in Hindi, 14 other languages from next week

The Union Health Ministry on Monday said that the CoWIN portal will be made available in Hindi and 14 regional languages by next week, while 17 more laboratories will be added to the INSACOG network to monitor the variants of COVID-19.

14.8 Lakh Covid-19 Vaccine Doses Administered In Past 24 Hrs

The Union Health Ministry on Monday said that the cumulative number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 18.44 crore with 14,79,592 doses given on Monday. As per data issued by the Centre, 6,63,329 beneficiaries in the age group of 18-44 years received their first dose of Covid-19 vaccine on Monday and cumulatively 59,32,704 people across 36 states and UTs since the start of phase-3 of the vaccination drive.

In an attempt to stem the rising COVID-19 cases, several states including Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Chandigarh announced to extend the existing lockdown restrictions.


In a major development, the government on Monday dropped the off-label use of convalescent plasma as it was not found beneficial in decreasing the progression to severe disease or death.


Meanwhile, Delhi government has requested Central government to urgently provide Covid vaccines. The AAP govt has already shut several vaccinations centres in the national capital due to shortage to vaccines.
