Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Wednesday said people whose relatives died due to oxygen shortage during the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic should "take the Union government to court".
Raut's comments came a day after the central government said in the Rajya Sabha that no deaths due to lack of oxygen were specifically reported by states and UTs during the second COVID-19 wave.
Reacting to it, Raut said, Many people have died due to oxygen shortage in several states. Those whose relatives (COVID-19 patients) died due to oxygen shortage should take the Union government to court."
"The Union government is running away from the truth. I seems it is the effect of Pegasus (Israeli spyware), the Rajya Sabha member said sarcastically while talking to reporters.
The Sena's chief spokesperson further said it needs to be found out whether the people whose relatives died due to lack of oxygen supply believe in the Centre's response in Parliament over the issue.
The Union government on Tuesday said in the Rajya Sabha that there was an unprecedented surge in demand for medical oxygen during the second wave and it peaked at nearly 9,000 MT compared to 3,095 MT in the first wave, following which the Centre had to step in to facilitate equitable distribution among the states.
"Centre says that as no State/UT sent any data regarding deaths specifically due to shortage of oxygen, since none of them said that a death occurred in their State/UT due to shortage of oxygen, there is no data for that. Did the Centre generate this data? No": Sambit Patra, BJP
No deaths took place due to lack of oxygen in our State. Union Health Min stated the same in Rajya Sabha. Even in Tamil Nadu, the health minister voiced the same opinion: Vishwas Sarang, Madhya Pradesh Medical Education Min on Centre saying 'no deaths due to lack of oxygen'
TN Health Minister M. Subramaniam also supported Centre's statement in the Rajya Sabha and said, "There are no deaths due to oxygen shortage in Tamil Nadu. CM has worked on a war footing to prevent this. When we faced lack of oxygen, we came in touch with the Centre at once and procured oxygen from them. So we didn't face big effects here."
India reports 42,015 new Covid cases, 36,977 recoveries, and 3,998 deaths in the last 24 hours, as per the Union Health Ministry. Daily positivity rate at 2.27%, less than 3% for 30 consecutive days.

A fully vaccinated White House official tested positive for Covid-19 but was found to have had no close contacts with White House principals or staff, confirmed White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Tuesday.
"Yesterday, a fully vaccinated White House official tested positive for Covid-19 off campus. In accordance with our rigorous Covid-19 protocols, the official remains off campus as they wait for confirmatory PCR test," said Psaki during Tuesday's press briefing, confirming earlier local media reports of the breakthrough case.
She said that the White House medical unit has conducted contact tracing and interviews, finding no close contact among White House principals, staff or President Joe Biden, the Xinhua news agency reported.
There have been other instances of vaccinated employees testing positive, Psaki said, though they were not commissioned officers and therefore were not reported by the administration.
President Joe Biden has said that even though the United States has seen a dramatic drop in the number of COVID-19 deaths due to its vaccination program, the country needs to remain vigilant about the Delta variant of coronavirus.
Stressing the need for people to get vaccinated, he said "virtually all" of the Covid deaths and hospitalisations are among the unvaccinated.
The highly contagious Delta variant, also known as B.1.617.2, was first detected in India in December and is spreading quickly across the globe. In some parts of America, the Delta strain accounts for more than 80 per cent of new infections, including some Midwestern states like Missouri, Kansas and Iowa.
Earlier this month, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had said that new Covid infections with the Delta variant account for 51.7 per cent of the infections in the US.
Addressing his second Cabinet meeting on the completion of six months of his administration on Tuesday, Biden said that overall, COVID-19 deaths have come down dramatically. And in the last six months, they have come down by about 90 per cent due to the vaccination program.
"But we have to stay vigilant, especially with the Delta variant that's out there. While COVID-19 cases are rising, virtually all of the Covid deaths and hospitalisations are from unvaccinated people. Let me say it again: virtually all are from unvaccinated people," he said.
As the pandemic's second wave flattens, only 1,464 tested Covid positive in a day, while 29 patients succumbed to the infection in Karnataka, said the state health bulletin on Tuesday.
"With 1,464 new cases registered on Monday, the state's Covid tally increased to 28,86,702, including 26,256 active cases, while 28,24,197 recovered so far, with 2,706 patients discharged during the day," said the bulletin.
As epi-centre of the pandemic in the state, Bengaluru, however, reported only 352 fresh cases on Monday, taking its Covid tally to 12,22,807, including 10,046 active cases, while recoveries rose to 11,96,807, with 1,110 patients discharged over the last 24 hours.
Following Bengaluru, 200 new cases were reported in Dakshina Kannada, 117 in Mysuru and 108 in Hassan districts across the state on Monday.
The virus claimed 29 lives, including 5 in Bengaluru, taking the state's death toll to 36,226 and the city's toll to 15,807 since the pandemic broke out in mid-March a year ago.
Delhi has less than a day's stock of coronavirus vaccines left, with nearly 30,000 doses administered on July 19, according to a bulletin issued on Tuesday. The national capital, as on Tuesday morning, had a balance stock of 2,63,170 coronavirus vaccines, out of which 1,95,290 doses are of Covishield and 67,880 of Covaxin, data shared by the government showed.
However, only 20 per cent of the Covaxin stock is to be used, since its stock is limited and has irregular delivery cycles, it noted. Only 25,986 doses were administered on Monday, of which 16,704 were first doses and 9,282 second doses.
