New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party's Anup Gupta won the Chandigarh mayor polls defeating Aam Aadmi Party's Jasbir with a margin of just onne vote. The BJP and AAP were in a close contest in the civic polls that took place today. The election of the deputy mayor was also slated along with the mayor’s seat.

Both BJP and AAP have 14 councillors each while Congress, which has decided not to take part in the election, has 6 councillors. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) also has one councillor.

In the municipal elections held in December 2021, AAP emerged as the single largest party after it won 14 wards. BJP had claimed 12 wards in the civic body while Congress won eight and SAD won one.

However, Congress’ Harpreet Kaur Babla and Gurcharan Jeet Singh Kala joined the BJP days before the mayoral election. Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher is also an ex-officio member of the municipal corporation of the Union Territory and her vote is counted like that of any other councillors in the process.
