With the growth of Christianity, December 25—the day of Jesus' birth—became acceptable, while January 1—the start of the new year—became heathen. It wasn't widely accepted until Pope Gregory changed the Julian calendar and declared January 1 to be the first day of the year.Prayer Meet For PM Modi's Mother Hiraben At Vadnagar In Gujarat On Jan 1: According to her family members, a prayer meeting will be held on Sunday in remembrance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mother Hiraben in the PM's birthplace of Vadnagar in Gujarat.Hiraben died at the age of 99 in Ahmedabad early Friday morning. She is survived by five sons, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his brothers Somabhai, Amrutbhai, Prahladbhai, and Pankajbhai, as well as her daughter Vasantiben.According to an advertisement published in a Gujarati newspaper on Saturday, Hiraben Damodardas Modi's "besnu," or prayer meeting, will be conducted at Vadnagar in Mehsana district on January 1 between 9 a.m. and noon.Hiraben died while receiving treatment at U N Mehta Heart Hospital.
