A court in Odisha's capital Bhubaneswar sentenced a man to death for fatally stabbing his wife and attempting to murder his six-year-old daughter by slitting her throat two years ago.
On June 9, 2022, the convict, 46-year-old Sanjeet Dash, stabbed his wife Saraswati, who was a head nurse at a private hospital, 33 times at their residence in Ghatikia area of Bhubaneswar just a few days after she gave birth to their second daughter, according to the prosecution.
He also slit the throat of his first daughter, who was six years old, but she survived. He was arrested the next day and a charge-sheet was filed in October, 2022.

The Supreme Court on Friday rejected the petition challenging the Maharashtra government's decision to rename Aurangabad district as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad as Dharashiv. "There is no need for judicial review of this. The High Court gave a detailed order after listening to you (petitioners). We will not interfere with it," the apex court said.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested a Trinamool Congress leader from Deganga in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district for his alleged links to a multi-crore ration distribution scam, an officer said on Friday. The central probe agency arrested TMC's Deganga block president Anisur Rehman and his elder brother late on Thursday after grilling them for nearly 14 hours at their Kolkata office, he said.
Rehman and his brother have been arrested in connection with the ration distribution scam. We will produce them at a city court following medical tests, the officer told PTI.
Rehman had been very close to former state forest minister Jyotipriyo Mallick, who has been arrested by the central probe agency in connection with the scam.

The Rouse Avenue court on Thursday remanded Shubham Jain, Ambuj Mathur Shailender Kumar Gautam in four days, and Abhishek Bisht in two days CBI custody, as reported by news agency ANI.
They have been arrested in the transnational cyber fraud case for allegedly defrauding US citizens worth 15 million dollars.
Earlier, they were remanded to judicial custody. CBI moved an application seeking 5 days remand for the accused persons.
Two other accused, Dhairya and Dhruv Khattar, are in CBI custody till August 3.

The Lebanese army monitored the launching of about 70 surface-to-surface rockets in two separate batches from the Lebanese side into Israel, and some of them were intercepted by the Israeli Iron Dome missile defence system, Lebanese military sources told news agency IANS.

President Droupadi Murmu To Chair 2-Day Governors' Conference Beginning Today
President Droupadi Murmu will chair a two-day conference of governors beginning Friday. This will be the first such conference that will be presided over by President Murmu.
During the conference, issues such as the implementation of the three new criminal laws, development in tribal areas, and reforms in higher education will likely be discussed.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, several Union Ministers, and senior officials from the PM's Office will attend the conference. The cabinet secretariat and other central ministries will also attend the conference.
"The agenda includes implementation of the three criminal laws, reforms in higher education and accreditation of universities, and development of focus areas like tribal areas, aspirational districts and blocks and border areas," the officials said.
The role of governors in campaigns like 'Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat', 'MYBharat', and 'Ek Vriksha Maa ke Naam', enhancing public connect, natural farming, and ensuring better coordination among central agencies in the state, will also be discussed at the conference.
"The governors will deliberate these agenda items in various breakaway groups.In the concluding session, these groups will make a presentation before the President, vice-president, prime minister and other participants," the officials added.
Met Forecasts Heavy Rain In South Bengal Till August 2
The Met office has forecast heavy rainfall in south Bengal districts till Friday. This comes as Kolkata and adjoining areas experienced this monsoon's first incessant downpur since July 31 afternoon.
Office-goers and school children faced difficulties reaching their destination on August 1 as heavy rains caused traffic snarls at some places in the city and its suburbs.
"Light to moderate rain with heavy downpour at one or two places are likely to occur in all south Bengal districts till Friday," the Met Office said in its forecast on Thursday.
It also stated that very heavy rain is likely at one or two places in Purba Bardhaman and Paschim Medinipur districts till Friday.
