New Delhi: West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar once again attacked the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in the state on Friday, accusing the state of setting an example for human rights violations.

Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar made the allegations during a videography address on the occasion of Human Rights Day on December 10 where he said that it is necessary to protect the rights of the people in order for the democratic system to flourish.

Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar in his address posted on Twitter said, "Human rights abuses are at the peak in West Bengal. The governance and authorities here are working as political activists. The terror of fear among people is so terrible that people can't even discuss openly. In order for the democratic system to survive, it is necessary to create human rights."

He further said, "How sad is the situation that the Human Rights Commission, whose job is to protect human rights, is in the ICU, on ventilator. Today, the absence of a programme on Human Rights Day is a very big thing. I would urge the government and officials to have their system of governance within the purview of the Constitution and conform to the law."

He tagged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal Police, Kolkata Police and tweeted, "The violation of Human rights is a serious matter. The government is distancing itself from the Constitution and the law, forcing the regime. You should never be so high, because the law is upon you."

He also questioned the TMC government over a number of issues since assuming office as governor in July 2019. He alleged the administration and officials in the state of behaving as political activists. On the other hand, the governor urged the officials to work under the provisions of the Constitution.

Meanwhile, state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in a message via Twitter on Human Rights Day called for unity among the people to defeat forces violating fundamental rights.
