The monkey ‘Kalua’ is a native of Mirzapur and was a pet of a local occultist who would regularly give the monkey alcohol. It seems over the years he developed quite the taste for liquor. The occultist’s demise left the now-alcoholic monkey without anyone to give him some liquor which resulted in aggressive behaviour. He has then gone into a biting spree, which forced locals to call the zoo authorities.
According to an IANS report, the monkey was captured by the zoo and forest teams with great difficulty and was brought to the Kanpur zoo. The zoo doctor Mohammed Nasir said, "We kept him in isolation for some months and then shifted him to a separate cage. There has been no change in his behaviour and he remains as aggressive as he was. It has been three years since he was brought here, but now it has been decided that he will remain in captivity all his life.”
The alcoholic primate is six years old and hasn’t even befriended his cage keeper. According to the zoo authorities, ff set free, Kalua will most likely resort to his old ways of harming people which is why it's best he stays in the zoo.
