Ever since its launch, enthusiasts all over the country have been giving the rugged Thar their distinctive personal touch. We bring you our favourites.

It might not be the default choice for any city slicker perusing the market for a new vehicle, but the Mahindra Thar carries with it a legendary aura that most SUVs just can’t dream of. Just from the looks of it, the ‘Thar’ brand carries with it a wild character that speaks volumes about its owner’s outdoorsy lifestyle. The stock Thar has a raw appeal about it but there are numerous modified examples where this 4x4 was made to look more menacing. Here is a list of modified Thars that would stand out on the road or away from it.

1. Mahindra Thar Hammer

Approx. cost of modification: Rs 5.5 lakh

Back in February 2018, DC Designs unwrapped yet another modified Thar SUV. Unlike other mod jobs, the Thar Hammer looked gorgeous rather than the in your face styling of most mod jobs, with changes inside and out. It gets projector headlamps, LED turn indicators, LED fog lamps, customised bonnet, LED tail lights and redesigned front and rear bumpers. The pronounced wheel arches, alloy wheels and a smart hardtop imbue the Thar with a classic look. Interior follow a full-red theme with a touchscreen infotainment system in the centre of the dash. The rear bench seats make way for captain seats.

2. Mahindra Thar Daybreak

Approx. cost of modification: Rs 10 lakh

Mahindra too offers a number of customisation options for its SUVs. Among them, we liked the Daybreak version of the Thar most. It is available in both soft-top and hard-top versions. On the outside, it gets customised bonnet, projector headlamps, LED tail lamps, side foot step cum rock slider, tow away trailer hook, carbon fibre rear suspension springs and customised door handles. And, of course, 16-inch alloys with off-road tyres.

On the inside, the Daybreak hard-top gets reverse camera, 2 DIN stereo with navigation, optional marine speakers, Android-based mood lighting, pure/genuine leather upholstery with laminated carpet, 3D matt on the floor and stainless steel exhaust pipe. There are smart touches of red in the centre of steering and around the centre console and AC vents, which help break the monotony of the dark-themed cabin.

3. Mahindra Thar Archer

Approx. cost of modification: Rs 10 lakh

The Mahindra Thar Archer is a perfect example of the saying, ‘if you can dream it, you can make it too’. Abhishek Somani of Delhi took two years and spent close to Rs 10 lakh to build this, which he likes to call a two-seater muscle tank. The Archer gets a completely new face with no resemblance whatsoever to the regular Thar. The bonnet height has been lifted by 10 inches while the doors have been lengthened by 6.

Inside, a new dashboard, roof-mounted switches, power windows and a music system ensure you are at ease in the cabin.

The Thar Archer also gets a retuned suspension with new fibre leaf springs and gas-filled shock absorbers at the rear. A DieselTronic tuning box and performance exhaust are some of the other highlights of this modified Thar.

4. Mahindra Thar Wanderlust

Approx. cost of modification: Rs 13.8 lakh

Another masterpiece to come out from Mahindra’s customisation department is the Thar Wanderlust. Showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo, the kit was introduced in April this year at Rs 13.80 lakh. The Wanderlust is a monster in every sense. It gets 35-inch off-road tyres, LED projector headlamps, matte blue shade, silver roof rails and high-mounted tail lights. There’s an electric sunroof to make you feel like you’re sitting inside a premium vehicle, and it also gets gullwing doors that would make it stand apart from anything else on the road. In case those big wheels can’t, that is.

Buyers also have an option to get the height of the vehicle lifted. The Wanderlust is a complete makeover over the regular Thar, with only the chassis, engine and drivetrain being carried forward. You can watch how it is to drive below.

5. Mahindra Thar Beast

Approx. cost of modification: unknown

The Mahindra Thar Beast is yet another tastefully modified Thar, designed by Azad 4x4. Carrying an imposing stance, the Beast is done up in grey metallic matte finish and comes with a roof carrier with work lights all around and a farm jack mounted on the carrier. The front, especially the headlamp housing, has been tweaked to look sharper. The large wheel fenders, modified front and rear metallic bumpers and Maxxis Bighorn steel tyres add to its visual treat.

Beneath the customised hard metal top, the Beast gets custom front seats with armrests, foldable jump seats at the rear and mood lighting. It can also be had with a sunroof!

All the modified Thars mentioned here feature no changes to their mechanicals. They continue to extract power from the 2.5-litre CRDe diesel powertrain, which pumps out max power of 106.5PS and 247Nm of peak torque. The engine is paired to a 5-speed manual transmission.
