The new-gen Jimny, which is touted to replace the Gypsy, gets features like a touchscreen infotainment system and LED projector headlamps

A few days ago, the production-spec 2019 Jimny was showcased to a select audience ahead of its official debut, which is expected to be in July 2018. Images from the event have give us a glimpse of the SUV’s exterior design. Now, a leaked brochure of the new Jimny has given us more information about its features, specifications and variants. Here’s all the info:

  • The Jimny will get a Sierra variant. This variant gets additional body cladding, wider tyres and a different set of alloy wheels over the standard Jimny

  • In terms of exterior design, the Jimny features LED projector headlamps, black bumpers, turn indicators integrated into the outside rearview mirrors (ORVMs) and tailgate-mounted spare wheel. The left ORVM gets an extra attachment on the lower side, which could be a lane watch camera for better blind spot detection

  • The leaked brochure also gives us a glimpse of the Jimny’s cabin. It features a touchscreen infotainment system (like the one seen on the Swift, Dzire and the Ignis) crowning the centre console. The switches for the automatic climate control and audio system look like the ones seen on the Swift. And so does the steering wheel, albeit not a flat bottom unit.

  • Like the previous model, the 2019 Jimny will be offered in a 3-door configuration with four seats. Out of those four, the front co-passenger and rear seats are foldable

  • The leaked brochure also mentions that the Jimny, as expected, is built on a body-on-frame chassis, like its predecessor and the Gypsy, for better off-road capability

  • Under the bonnet, the Jimny is expected to get a 0.66-litre petrol engine to meet Japanese ‘Kei’ car rules. For the international market, however, the Jimny will share its engines with the Euro-spec Swift and Baleno (a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol and a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol). While all these are speculations, the image confirms that the Jimny will come with an automatic transmission. Like its predecessor, the new Jimny will also come with a part-time 4WD system (Suzuki AllGrip)

  • Suzuki has not yet set an official reveal date for the 2019 Jimny, but the leaked brochure confirms that it will happen in July 2018. Initially, the SUV will go on sale in the brand’s home market (Japan) followed by other markets in late-2018 or early-2019

  • There is no confirmation on whether the 2019 Jimny will make it to India. If it does, it would be a suitable replacement for the ageing Gypsy. Maruti Suzuki will need to replace the Gypsy soon as it will require a great effort on the carmaker’s part to make it comply with upcoming safety norms in the country
