Several places in India experience extreme weather conditions, with heatwaves taking a toll on citizens that can leave them feeling drained throughout the day. This prompts many to seek solace in air-conditioned environments, which can deter us from sticking to our usual exercise routines. Despite this, the dedicated ones keep hitting the gyms and sweating it out every day. Working out in such hot and humid conditions can, at times, strain the body's ability to regulate its temperature, potentially leading to various heart-related issues if proper precautions aren't observed.
Dr MS Purkait, Medical Superintendent, Techno India DAMA Hospital said that exercise benefits all normal people and also people with heart and blood vessel diseases or those who have had a recent cardiac event or heart surgery.
He said, "Aerobic exercises are particularly useful for cardiac health. However, it is best to gradually start your exercise program after a medical consultation. It is also imperative to make sure it is age-appropriate. AHA suggests 150 minutes (in a week) of walking and mild exercises for those who are able to do it. It is also important to get adequate rest in between and to gradually increase the endurance level."
"Extreme exercise and competing in endurance events can sometimes lead to heart damage and rhythm disorders in some individuals who have a genetic predisposition. Sometimes there is an increased risk of Atrial Fibrillation causing irregular heartbeat which can lead to blood clots and a higher risk of stroke. The key to a good heart is exercising moderately and regularly and selecting the appropriate type of exercise," he added.
Things People Should Keep In Mind Before Opting For High-Intensity Training:
During high-intensity exercise, the heart rate increases, which is why it's important to give gaps between exercises, take proper rest, and drink plenty of water.
Raju Barik, a Fitness Expert, at Absolute Gym said, "Regularly, the problem arises when the body overheats, leading to muscle cramps. That's why it's crucial to drink plenty of water. It's essential to stay hydrated and take breaks, with at least a 30-second break between each set. It's advisable to avoid high-intensity workouts during summer to prevent complications such as heart failure. Instead, opting for a normal 10-12 sets of repetitions is more than sufficient."
Satrajit Sen who is a Partner at Offbeat Strength listed the following things that people should keep in mind:
