Raksha Bandhan 2021: The festival of Raksha Bandhan symbolizes the caring and loving relationship between brothers and sisters. This festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Hinduism. On this day sisters tie rakhi or Raksha sutra on their brother's wrist. By applying tilak on their brothers' foreheads, sisters wish them a happy and prosperous life and seek god's blessings for their longevity. The brother also promises the sister to protect her from any harm that may come her way.

According to Hindi Panchang, the festival of Raksha Bandhan is celebrated every year on the full moon of Sawan. This year this festival falls on Sunday, August 22. There is no particular inauspicious time on Raksha Bandhan this time. So sisters can tie rakhi to their brothers any time throughout the day. It is important for brothers and sisters to follow certain things on this day to avoid any inauspicious event.

Things to avoid during this year's Raksha Bandhan

  • On the day of Raksha Bandhan, rakhi should not be tied during the time of Bhadra and Rahukaal. Tying rakhi in Bhadra and Rahukaal is considered inauspicious for both brother and sister.

  • Both brother and sister should avoid the black colour on Raksha Bandhan. It is considered a symbol of negativity.

  • While tying the rakhi, the sister and brother should make sure that the brother is not facing the southern direction. It is best to face east or north while tying rakhi.

  • Brothers and sisters should not gift each other a towel or handkerchief on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. This is not considered auspicious.

  • While tying rakhi on Raksha Bandhan, use only whole rice during the 'Akshat' ceremony. Do not use broken rice. It is because 'Akshat' means one who has not been damaged or harmed.
